The University of St Andrews has partnered with temperature control specialist Aggreko to provide an interim heating and hot water system during the shutdown of its existing heating infrastructure for a major upgrade.

The prestigious University of St Andrews was founded in 1413 and is regarded as one of the world’s leading research and teaching centres. Its historic buildings were heated by an ageing heating infrastructure and it became necessary to shut down the campus’ heating and hot water system to install new boilers and replace sections of pipework.

The team worked with Aggreko to design and implement a temporary heating system to maintain full operation of the university campus while repairs and upgrades were organised and then implemented. Aggreko provided three separate bespoke heating packages totalling 2000kW to different areas of the campus.

Four 250kW boilers were placed at a distance of 75m from the existing boiler room and hoses were run to provide heating and hot water to the United Colleges and Irvine building. This ensured that lectures and other day-to-day activities could continue as normal.

Two additional 250kW boilers were situated 50m from a second boiler room at the Arts Building, while two others were installed in an extremely limited space at the Psychology Building, which houses critical facilities that require consistent temperature.

Aggreko provided a compact solution to make effective use of limited space and was able to speedily design, install and operate a full heating package. This enabled work to start quickly on the permanent heating infrastructure.

Robert Watson, Electrical Engineer at St Andrews, says: “Once the heating survey was completed, it was apparent that we needed to implement immediate maintenance and upgrades.  We spoke to Aggreko first as we knew they could respond quickly and had confidence that they could design and provide a full, reliable interim heating scheme.”

Russell Brown, Regional Sales Manager for Aggreko, adds: “Having supplied the university with a contingency plan for emergency power, we were already familiar with the site. This meant we were able to speedily design and install a temporary solution, to provide uninterrupted heating and hot water to staff and students during the permanent infrastructure works. Our technology was continuously monitored and maintained by our local engineering team to ensure peak performance.”

Aggreko used its new high efficiency 250kW boiler model that can provide temperatures up to 90ºC. The new technology combines an advanced dual stage burner, three-way valve system and smart controls to optimise temperature control and minimise fuel burn and emissions. The boilers are housed in a compact canopy case, which makes them easy to transport and permits use in confined compounds, service yards and boiler rooms.

Aggreko has more than 50 years’ experience supporting organisations with both planned and emergency HVAC, power and cooling projects. The company offers a 24/7 service from 18 service centres across the UK and Ireland.
