An air source heat pump has been donated by Ariston to the engineering department at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU),  with the aim of supporting academic learning and student understanding around heat pump technology and the future of sustainability.

The manufacturer has provided the engineering department at ARU’s Chelmsford campus with a Nimbus Pocket 50 ASHP to give students a deeper understanding into how heat pump technology works and can be used to create a more sustainable future. The heat pump will benefit students on several BEng, MEng and MSc courses at ARU, including mechanical engineering, mechatronics and robotic engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, civil engineering, and biomedical engineering.

During a recent visit to the university, Ariston was given a tour of the facilities, including the Marconi building where the heat pump is installed, as well as the opportunity to meet students and get involved in discussions around future collaboration opportunities. Students who will be using the heat pump also presented their own research projects, including about the thermodynamics cycle and heat recovery for preheating supply cold water, showing how the Nimbus ASHP will make a significant contribution to their understanding.

Edoardo Pauletta, country manager at Ariston, comments: “We’re pleased to donate one of our Nimbus Pocket air source heat pumps to Anglia Ruskin University. As the UK makes swift strides towards achieving net zero goals, it is vital that the next generation of students looking to work in the renewable energy, sustainability, and environmental sectors have access to these new technologies.

“We hope this heat pump will give students a better understanding into sustainable heating technology as well as hands-on learning opportunities, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career as the UK transitions to a greener future.”
