With the aim of addressing industry skeptics and misinformation from fossil fuel lobbyists, Octopus Energy has unveiled a new tool to prove that heat pumps are cheaper to run than gas boilers.

The company’s new Cosy Heat Pump Fleet Performance Dashboard streams up-to-date efficiency and cost data from all of its Cosy branded heat pumps installed in hundreds of British homes. The new dashboard collects anonymised aggregate data and proves that over the last month, Cosy systems generated over 4 kWh of heat for every 1 kWh unit of energy put in, with a COP (efficiency rating) of 4.11. The dashboard also allows users to drill down into regional data, showing exactly how much heat is delivered for every kWh of energy used.

The data suggests that 80% of Cosy heat pumps have been cheaper to run over the last year than a gas boiler, while customers on Octopus’ heat pump tariff, Cosy Octopus, saved on average £219 a year vs a gas boiler.

Greg Jackson, CEO and Founder of Octopus Energy, says: “We’re launching this revolutionary data dashboard to prove, in perpetuity, that heat pumps cost less to run than a gas boiler. This isn’t a projection or a lab test – it’s daily data from thousands of homes. We are showing the world that our Cosy tech can beat the boiler in efficiency, slash bills, and lead the charge to a cleaner, cheaper energy system.”

In a recent survey of Octopus customers, 85% said their heat pump costs the same or less to run than their old gas boiler, and 89% reported total satisfaction even during the January 2026 cold snap (the survey of 1,820 customers was carried out between 5th and 8th January).
