More than 5.5 million people in the UK are not getting their gas appliances safety checked on an annual basis, leading to over 67,000 gas emergencies across the UK over the last 12 months, according to new research from Gas Safe Register.
The study also identified over 300 injuries and six deaths were caused by unsafe gas appliances last year, with one in six homes, following an inspection of 147,000 residencies over the last five years, containing a dangerous gas device.
The research is part of Gas Safe Register’s plan to raise the public’s awareness during Gas Safety Week which runs until Sunday 20th September.
Jonathan Samuel, chief executive of Gas Safe Register, said: “With the average cost of safety checking your gas boiler at just £60, it’s a small price to pay to keep you and your family safe and prevent damage to your home.
“While we’re seeing more people getting gas safety checks compared to last year, millions are still taking risks so we’re reminding people to make sure all their gas appliances are safety checked every year.”
