The latest market report from AMA Research suggests that the UK underfloor heating sector bounced back in 2021 with an estimated 16% value growth. Due to an increasing focus on low-carbon heating technologies, it is predicted that this market will continue to offer significant growth potential, particularly in the residential sector.
Residential new housing, covering both new build and retrofit installations accounted for around 67% of the underfloor heating market value in 2021. The remaining 33% of market value is made up from the non-residential sector, including applications such as hospitals, clinics, care homes, schools and colleges, commercial offices, retail premises and entertainment & leisure venues, as well as industrial warehouses and distribution centres.
Distribution within the market continues to be dominated by direct supply, although online sales are growing at a rapid pace.
Another positive influence on the UK underfloor heating market is the growing number of plumbing and heating engineers who have been trained in the installation of underfloor heating systems. Greater product awareness and knowledge amongst installers is likely to boost recommendations to customers.
Product developments have made underfloor heating systems easier to install, broadening their appeal for the retrofit market. This has led to the emergence of systems (both water-based and electric) which can be laid over existing floors, thereby minimising disruption and speeding up installation time.
Editor of the report and head of Content at AMA Research, Abdul Tantouch comments: “Increasing legislation and the drive towards carbon net zero by 2050 represents a major influence in the long-term development of the UK underfloor heating market. The 2025 Future Homes Standard will require new build homes to be future proofed with low carbon methods of home heating.
“Energy efficiency has also become a key issue, given the significant rising cost of electricity and gas, exacerbated by the war between Russia and Ukraine. Heating solutions that are greener, energy efficient and cost less to run will be in greater demand. This includes renewable technologies combined with underfloor heating; this is estimated to be up to 40% more energy efficient that traditional central heating solutions.”
