Brussel sprouts are claimed to be one of the major causes of blocked pipes over the Christmas holidays. This was one of the findings of research carried out by plumbing and drainage manufacturer Wavin which also revealed that three quarters (74%) of the UK plumbers surveyed say they expect to see an increase in callouts over Christmas, with the Boxing Day bank holiday the busiest day for blocked pipes – with almost twice as many callouts as any other day in the festive period.
This research has been carried out as part of Wavin’s annual ‘State of the Nation’ survey – which asks UK plumbers exactly what is on their mind. According to this year’s research, there are some other unusual culprits for causing blocked pipes, including:
- Lego
- Rubber ducks
- Socks
- Sex toys
- Teeth
- Turkey bones
- Wet wipes
The research shows that the Christmas period represents a big spike for clogs, with additional cooking oils and food dumped down the drain, especially when extended families get together for big meals. This often leads to blocked pipes, so being aware of this will help to prevent hefty out-of-hours callouts for many Brits.
